424-C Ornamentation III

This is the final Ornamentation class. This three day class is broken down in three phases. In the first phase, Technology, we cover the nuts and bolts of the trompe l'oeil, from sample making, paint preparation, and mediums to be used (water, slow drying acrylic, oil, reversible medium). You will learn light and shadow placement, formula for all trompe l'oeil, design selection, layout and transfer, finding the light source, the color of trompe l'oeil, and more. In the second phase, Painting Drills, we will cover a few drills that cover all parts of trompe l'oeil from striping, fading the stripe, tracing, and transferring. These series of repetitive drills are made for the student to understand the different elements of the trompe l'oeil techniques without worrying about color and focusing on brushmanship. The third phase is Demonstration and Samples. In this final phase we will put it all together by doing demonstrations of simple faux molding profiles, combination molding, a raised boss ornament, and a polychrome ornamentation if time permits. The students get to sample each of the demonstrations putting in effect all the technology and drills from the previous parts. As in most of the classes, we also open the discussion to jobsite life, dealing with clients, the most common issues with designers, contracts, and budgeting. Students walk away from these classes with notebooks filled with information and drawings. We encourage questions and still photography; we try to make each class a live version of The Art of Faux.
